Banquet held for LaFayette High basketball team

A banquet was held on Thursday to honor the 2015 Class 2A state champion LaFayette High School boys basketball team. Hosted by Tammie Williams and Joe Broome, the event included a keynote speech by longtime legendary coach John T. Woody. Woody led the Bulldogs to two state titles during his tenure at LHS. This year’s team captured the fourth basketball championship in school history when they defeated Elba High School. Woody told the team and guests at the banquet, “no one was as excited as I was when you won the title, you played like Bulldogs.” Woody noted that LHS has had only three basketball coaches in the last 40 years and each has now won a state title; though he jokingly added that he has won the most. Woody also talked about life away from the hardwood for the young men, emphasizing respect, academics, pride in community and family, and faith in God. Other speakers that applauded the team at the banquet were Superintendent Kelli Hodge, Dr. Randy Kelley, Athletic Director James Lucas and Principal Don Turner. The team and guests were also treated to a delicious meal courtesy of Jerome Bailey and given t-shirts detailing their accomplishments during the landmark 2014-15 basketball season. Final Four MVP Trevond Barnes spoke on behalf of the team, thanking all those that helped make the night and season possible. “We won this for you all,” Barnes told the crowd.
