LaFayette Clippers to play in USSSA National Tournament

The LaFayette Clippers, the city’s summer 12 and under travel basketball team, will be competing in the USSSA National Tournament this week in Gainesville, Florida. Dozens of teams from across the southeast and other parts of the country will be making the trip to participate in the tournament.

The three-day event will take place from June 26th to the 29th. In addition to LaFayette’s grouping, the National Tournament will include both girls and boys teams from grades three through 12. The tournament starts with pool play on Thursday and Friday, and bracket play will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the championship rounds taking place on Saturday.

Along with the games, the event features skill competitions including a dunk contest, three-points competition, free throw contest and team shooting contest. The skills competitions will take place Thursday.

In order to quality to play in the National Tournament, each team must qualify at a National Qualifying Tournament.

LaFayette qualified at the State Qualifier on June 17 in Montgomery, by finishing second in the five-team tournament. They were 3-1 in the tournament, and scored a tournament-high 173 points through four games. LaFayette defeated the Butler County Stars in their first game 57-15, and then defeated the Montgomery Bravehearts 32-22. They advanced to the title game with a 49-21 win over the Alabama EYS Wildcats out of Lanett. LaFayette came up short in the title game to the Alabama Dream Team out of Montgomery by a score of 48-35. Corey Boston and Markevious Moore were both named to the All-Tournament Team for LaFayette.

So far this summer, LaFayette has compiled a 12-4 record competing in four tournaments, and has a 9-2 record against teams in their class. They won the Montgomery Easter Egg Scramble tournament in April and finished second in the USSSA March Madness tournament in Tuskegee in March.

Teams in LaFayette’s division at the National Tournament include ones from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Missouri.
