National Guard members may now be eligible to receive additional tuition assistance due to the passage of legislation sponsored by Senator Gerald Dial.
In 1984, the Legislature authorized the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, under the Alabama National Guard Educational Assistance Act, to pay instate tuition costs for qualified members of the Alabama National Guard. Since the legislation was enacted, the award limits for the available funds have fallen short of supporting college students.
Senator Dial’s bill addresses the award amount that each individual may receive without any additional cost to the state. Instead of a $500 per term limit, with a maximum annual award of $1,000, the recipient now has the potential of receiving up to $2,000 annually.
We all are aware of the sacrifices made by our military men and women. Many times they are required to put their lives in harm’s way to protect the freedoms we have in this country. And at home, guard members have responded to numerous emergencies, the most recent being catastrophic weather conditions.
Thank you Senator Dial for your support of our military personnel and for higher education.
